Fire at Latham Village Apartments burns almost ten units
LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -The Latham Fire Department received a call around two in the afternoon that Building 39 at Latham Village Apartments was on fire. No one was hurt but two apartments were completely gutted and six or seven were damaged.
It took multiple fire departments an hour to put out the fire. Investigators currently believe the fire may have started on the first floor.
One Latham Village resident showed NEWS10’s Anthony Krolikowski that a propane tank was right next to the burning building. Craig Smith said it eventually exploded. “I was standing off to the side. There was a propane tank that did explode. I think it made the fire worse.”
“The fire got up into the attic here and ran the common attic so that was the hardest spot,” described Chief Michael Romano Jr. with the Fuller Road Fire Department. “Putting the fire out in the apartments was not hard it was just up in the attics which takes a lot of man power, cutting holes, getting handlines in place, pulling ceilings inside; everything is labor intensive.”
No one was injured. Fire investigators are expected to be at the apartment building for the next few days.
