People Who Watch the News the Most Vote More Liberal
President Donald Trump won over the least politically engaged voting bloc by a historically significant amount in the 2024 election, a Democratic research firm recently reported.
Eric Levitz, a political commentator for Vox, interviewed David Shor, head of data science at Blue Rose Research, to discuss how and why former Vice President Kamala Harris lost the election to Trump. Shor said that the most politically engaged voters supported former President Joe Biden in 2020 and Harris in 2024.
There was not a clear majority of votes from the least politically engaged bloc to indicate whether the group supported Trump or Biden in 2020, Shor said, but the 2024 election saw the bloc turn dramatically in favor of Trump.

“They’re a group that Biden either narrowly won or narrowly lost four years ago. But this time, they voted for Trump by double digits,” Shor said, according to Vox.
He later said that the bloc supported Republicans by about 15 points in 2024.
“And I think this is just analytically important,” he added. “People have a lot of complaints about how the mainstream media covered things. But I think it’s important to note that the people who watch the news the most actually became more Democratic.”
Shor also noted that the least politically engaged voters tended to be driven by the cost of living but said that the reason for such a large shift is a “long-term trend that goes beyond inflation or social media.” He added that typical Democrat supporters have begun moving from the working-class demographic to those with college educations.
Younger demographics, according to Shor, are more politically disengaged than voters overall. He said Trump “probably narrowly won 18-to-29-year-olds.”
