Director reveals how Barcelona felt about Lucas Bergvall’s transfer snub to join Tottenham
Djurgardens sporting director has made a big admission about his talks with Barcelona regarding Lucas Bergvall and explained what the feeling at Camp Nou was when they were told the midfielder had chosen Tottenham.
It was well documented that Tottenham beat out competition from Barcelona to land the Swede in January of last year, with the midfielder linking up with the Spurs squad last summer.
Back in May of last year, Bergvall admitted that he saw the Spurs project as a better fit for him than Barca, and it is hard to argue that the 19-year-old’s decision has not been vindicated, given how well he has done in his debut Premier League campaign.
According to some reports in Spain, Barca had a verbal agreement with Bergvall before Tottenham came in and made a much more lucrative offer to the player and his agent.
Barcelona were surprised Bergvall decided to join Spurs instead
Djurgardens’ sporting director Bosse Andersson has now confirmed that serious talks were held with Barca over a deal for the Swedish international.
He revealed that the La Liga giants were surprised and disappointed when they found out that Bergvall had picked Spurs, but Andersson insisted that the midfielder’s decision was the right one.
The Swedish club’s director said on Carina Bergfelt’s talk show: “Lucas is an interesting and talented footballer. We had the privilege of discussing with one of the biggest football clubs in Europe, Barcelona, who were interested. I think Barcelona were quite surprised (to miss out on signing him) because you don’t go to Barcelona just to look, you go there to have tapas and see if it’s pretty.
“I think they were very disappointed that he chose Tottenham. But the decision itself was the right one because he has become an established Premier League player. All the coaches and everyone talk about him as a fantastic player, and he just turned 19.”
Tottenham are a very attractive destination for up-and-coming talent
Things may have gone horribly wrong for Tottenham this season on many counts, but there is one silver lining to come from the club’s injury issues.
Many talented young players around the world would have looked at the fact that Postecoglou has backed the likes of Bergvall and Archie Gray, and might be attracted by the prospect of playing at N17 under the Australian.
Spurs could potentially have an advantage over other suitors in the race for top emerging young talent such as Jamie Gittens, Tyler Dibling, and Liam Delap given their willingness to play top talent.
