K-State golfer prepares for amateur tournament ahead of Masters
MANHATTAN (KSNT) - Most golfers dream of someday playing in Augusta, Georgia at the Masters. But for one K-State athlete, this dream has become a reality time and time again.
K-State senior Carla Bernat is not your typical college golfer. Along with her collegiate tournaments, she's preparing for the Augusta National Women's Amateur Tournament in April.
It takes place one week before the Masters as a way to bring interest into the game of women's golf.
She's just one of 72 players chosen from across the globe and one of six representing her home country of Spain.
"I mean, such an honor being able to compete for Kansas State and also my country, Spain," Bernat said. "So I'm just really excited."
And Carla is no stranger to this tournament. This will be her third appearance, meaning she's no rookie to the event.
"Is my third time," Bernat said. "So people say third time's a charm."
Carla told 27 News since she's familiar with the courses, she knows that she's going to have to be patient, all while enjoying it one last time with her caddy who doubles as her assistant coach at K-State.
"It's definitely like bittersweet because I am really happy to do it, but at the same time is the last time I want to do it," Bernat said. "So, it's just like, kind of sad."
The Women's Amateur Tournament takes place April 2-5. Bernat will start with Champions Retreat Golf Club and try to advance to Augusta National. And after what she hopes is a successful last tournament at Augusta, she turns right around to finish her senior season at K-State.
