Clinton’s superb goal the highlight as Man United return to winning ways in the Women's Super League
Manchester United Women returned to winning ways in the Women’s Super League with a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday evening.
Coach Marc Skinner made just one change to the side that started against Liverpool, with Dominique Janssen being replaced by Hinata Miyazawa in midfield.
The Mancunian giants started the game strongly, creating a flurry of chances within the first ten minutes, but they failed to find the back of the net.
The home side had their first chance through a free-kick after midfielder Jill Baijings was fouled. Gabi Nunes cleverly attempted to place the ball under the wall, but it was blocked.
United broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Jayde Riviere picked out Celin Bizet, who set up Elisabeth Terland at the far post for a clinical finish.
The visitors doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark. Baijings gave the ball away, allowing Riviere to deliver a pinpoint cross to Terland, who headed past goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo to bag her second of the game.
United extended their advantage on the stroke of halftime with a moment of brilliance from Grace Clinton.
Spotting D’Angelo off her line, the midfielder executed a perfect 40-yard chip to make it 3-0.
Villa nearly pulled one back before the break when United failed to clear their lines, allowing Nunes to direct a header toward goal, but the effort struck the woodwork.
United were forced into a halftime substitution, with defender Gabby George making way for Anna Sandberg.
The Red Devils almost added a fourth when Riviere cut the ball back from the right flank, but Leah Galton was unable to control it as it slipped through her legs.
However, they didn’t have to wait long for another goal. In the 64th minute, United produced a stunning team move.
Terland, after receiving the ball in midfield, found Melvine Malard, who whipped in a cross for Galton to apply the finishing touch.
