MLB Insider Shares Major Opening Day Note About Top Red Sox Prospect
As if Red Sox fans needed more reasons to be excited for Opening Day.
The buzz surrounding Boston’s first regular-season contest is through the roof for the Fenway Faithful, who are eager to see the new-look club get the show on the road. Ace Garrett Crochet will be on the bump for the Red Sox in Texas, where fellow marquee offseason addition Alex Bregman also will make his Boston debut.
It remains to be seen who will join Bregman, Trevor Story and Triston Casas in the infield on March 27, but according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, there’s a favorite in the clubhouse.
“Kristian Campbell with a spectacular diving catch of a line drive, moving to his left,” Olney posted to X on Saturday. “The presumption around Red Sox camp is that he will be their second baseman.”
Campbell wasn’t a lock to win the second base job after dealing with some spring training struggles. However, the 22-year-old started to turn things around as Opening Day drew closer and his electrifying skill set could be too tough for Alex Cora to ignore. Boston also has some runway to experiment at second base while Rafael Devers continues to nurse his shoulders.
Cora still has a handful of days to announce his decision, but it sure seems like his mind already is made up.
