Tottenham player left ‘deeply upset’ over his off-field treatment at the club
Cristian Romero is reportedly furious with Tottenham’s medical team over their handling of his injury, with the Argentine defender expressing gratitude instead to his national team’s physios for his recovery.
Since picking up a quadricep injury against Chelsea on 8 December, Cristian Romero was sidelined for 86 days, missing nearly three months of action.
It was a significant blow for Ange Postecoglou’s side, as the defender’s absence left a gaping hole in Tottenham’s backline during a crucial stretch of the season with Micky van de Ven also absent.
During that period, Romero sat out 21 matches for the Lilywhites. However, he has since made a return, featuring in Spurs’ last four games.
He played the full 90 minutes in the Europa League second leg against Alkmaar, logged 129 minutes across two Premier League fixtures, including a 68-minute runout in the 2-0 loss to Fulham and completed 61 minutes in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.
Cristian Romero takes a swipe at Tottenham’s medical team
Despite just regaining fitness at club level, Romero who was called up to Argentina’s national team, managed to play the full 90 minutes in their recent World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, a match Lionel Scaloni’s side won 1-0.
Now, journalist Eduardo Burgos has shed light on Romero’s feelings regarding his injury. In a post on X, Burgos highlighted the Spurs centre-back’s appreciation for Argentina’s medical team.
He said: “I’m grateful that the national team’s medical team was able to get me out of that bad moment.”
The journalist further reported that Romero was “deeply upset” with how Tottenham’s medical staff handled his rehabilitation.
Romero’s history of criticism towards Spurs’ physios
This is not the first time Romero has indirectly taken a swipe at Tottenham’s medical staff. After making his long-awaited return from injury, he posted a message on social media that caught the attention of Spurs supporters.
Rather than acknowledging Tottenham’s physios, Romero publicly thanked Argentina’s medical team for aiding his recovery. His words were clear:
“Thankful to the physios at Argentina for getting me out of a bad moment and putting me back on the field where I am so happy. Thank you all for your continued support.”
