Sports Briefs: Marin Catholic blanks Riordan at Oracle Park
Marin Catholic ramped up the energy at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over Archbishop Riordan.
Wildcats senior Carson Davis and sophomore Cooper Benjamin combined to shut down Riordan, which managed just two hits. Davis rang up a pair of strikeouts through 4 1/3 innings, while Benjamin struck out six of the eight batters he faced.
Davis had a solid day at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Johnny Greco drew a pair of walks and scored twice for Marin Catholic (7-3).
- After trailing for most of the game, Branson rallied to win 3-2 in extra innings against St. Patrick-St. Vincent in Vallejo on Saturday.
- San Domenico was overwhelmed early in Friday night’s 24-10 loss to International at Albert Park. The Panthers (3-4) gave up seven runs in the second inning and the Jaguars (2-6) continued to put up runs on the board. San Domenico managed just four hits, with Sam Tavano, Colin Falconer, Oliver Bennett and Alex Brook each chipping in. San Domenico is scheduled to host Urban on Tuesday at Albert Park in a BCL West showdown.
- Tomales survived a furious rally effort from Cornerstone Christian for a 9-5 home victory on Friday. The Braves (2-2) scored four runs in the fourth inning for a 8-0 lead, which they made stand up, despite giving up three runs in the seventh. Tomales senior Erick Tamez was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while junior Jorge Lopez was 2-for-3 with a double.
Girls track
Branson School sophomore Farah Allen won the 3200 meter event, with Redwood junior Sydney Middleton close behind in second place Saturday at the Dublin Distance Fiesta. Allen clocked in at 11 minutes, 9.82 seconds, with Middleton just 8.1 seconds behind her.
Archie Williams junior Ani Stieg placed fourth in the 1600 meter with a mark of 4:56.39, less than 4 seconds off the winning time. Tam senior Emma Gardner (5:01.98) placed 11th, Allen (5:03.20) taking 15th.
Boys track
Archie Williams senior Will Mulliken took eighth place in the 1600 meter event Saturday at the Dublin Distance Fiesta. Mulliken crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 19.21 seconds. Redwood’s Sean Niemi placed 10th in the 3200 (9:58.21).
Boys lacrosse
Marin Catholic powered past host St. Ignatius, 17-4, on Saturday in the title game of the Catholic Cup. The Wildcats (8-1) beat De La Salle, 14-8, in Thursday’s tournament opener.
- Redwood led by as many as three goals, but saw that lead evaporate against host Monte Vista during Friday’s 9-8 non-league loss to the undefeated Mustangs. The Giants (5-4) are scheduled to host Tam in Monday’s MCAL contest. Monte Vista (7-0) is scheduled to host Marin Academy (6-4) on Tuesday.
Girls mountain biking
Archie Williams’ Vesper Klausner came on strong late as she finished a close second in Saturday’s Six Sigma Shred varsity race at Lower Lake. Klausner crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 23 minutes, 6.85 seconds.
Redwood’s Charlotte Philkill (1:25:25.61) placed fourth, followed by the Tam duo of Johannah Nesbit (1:26:35.40) and Jo Moore (1:27:13.47), who placed fifth and sixth, respectively. The Giants’ Ava Scott placed eighth, with teammate Ginger Howard 10th.
Boys mountain biking
San Marin’s Te’Ah Hirschfeld won a breakneck battle by less than 2 seconds to take first place in Saturday’s Six Sigma Shred varsity race at Lower Lake. Hirschfeld won with a time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, 37.90 seconds. He crossed the finish line with Ryder Williams (1:07:39.15) of Granite Bay and Ghidotti’s Dylan Finkler (1:07:39.28) right on his heels.
Archie Williams’ Dylan Donner (1:10:51.38) placed eighth, with the Mustangs’ Kieran Sanctuary (1:10;52.11) ninth. Tam’s James Newman placed 11th, with San Domenico’s Jake McDonnell 18th and Redwood’s Dylan Corteville 20th.
College softball
Dominican University dropped the series finale 2-1 Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday in San Rafael. Kate Tobola went 2-for-4 and Alyssa Rue was 2-for-3 for the Penguins (20-15, 11-8 PacWest) while Nayellys Torres-Gonzalez pitched four shutout innings in relief.
Women’s tennis
Dominican University’s Audrey Rafols, ranked 11th nationally, held tough for a three-set singles win as the Penguins (10-3) swept Hawaii-Hilo, 4-0, on Friday. Rafols boasts a 9-2 singles record.
Girls swimming
Tam High defeated Terra Linda, 123-47, Friday in Mill Valley. The Red-tailed Hawks (6-0) were led by double-winners in seniors Elle Philp (100 fly, 100 back) and Addison Everage (500 free, 100 breast), and sophomore Sophia Uhlhorn-Thornton (50 and 100 free). The Tam girls finished 1-2-3 in the 200 free (Sabine Barringer, Reese Arwin, Samantha Octavio), the 50 free (Uhlhorn-Thornton, Nola Palestrant, Audrey Lowell), the 100 fly (Philp, Angelina Mauzy, Sarah Kemper) and the 100 back (Philp, Barringer, Cat Philp).
Boys swimming
Terra Linda, the defending MCAL boys champions, beat Tam, 115-58, Friday. The Trojans were led by winners Jack Middleton (50 free, 100 free), Ben Butler (200 free, 100 back) and Nicholas Arinduque (100 fly, 100 breast). The solitary win for the Tam boys came in the diving, with Finn Croley taking an uncontested first.
Boys tennis
San Marin swept doubles play and Shawn Bested picked up a win at No. 4 singles to give the Mustangs a 4-3 victory over Marin Catholic. Jack Millar, Charlie Millar and Felix Adam gave the Wildcats singles wins at Nos. 1-3, respectively.
- Tam swept Terra Linda, 7-0, during a match that could have turned on a dime as three matches went to super-tiebreakers. The Red-tailed Hawks’ Diego Castillo beat the Trojans’ En-Yu Liu, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 2 singles. Tam’s Sam Zail rallied to beat Teddy Reibel, 6-1, 6-7, 10-3 at No. 3 singles. Tam got wins from Witt Bulger at No. 1 singles and Nathan Bandouveres at No. 4.
