LUBBOCK, Texas -- Monterey High School senior Aaliyah Chavez, the number 1 women’s basketball recruit in the country, has decided to commit to the University of Oklahoma.
Chavez had been recruited by dozens of the top basketball schools, including Texas, UCLA, LSU, South Carolina, and Oklahoma.
She finished her career with 4,796 points, which ranks 14th all-time on the girls’ state scoring list. She averaged 34.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 3.7 steals per game as a senior, leading Monterey to a 37-5 record and 5A Division II state title earlier this month.
She visited the Longhorns earlier this month as well for one of their final regular-season games, and head coach Vic Schaefer attended one of her playoff games and, over the weekend, visited Oklahoma, attending their NCAA tournament game on Saturday.
Chavez was recently named the Naismith Girls High School Player of the Year and Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, ending one of the most prolific prep basketball careers ever.
Chavez can't officially sign until the Division I basketball regular signing period begins on April 16.
