March 21: Brayden Lee’s relaxed approach to his opening round at the weather-hit Porsche Singapore Classic paid off after he returned with a creditable three-under-par 69 on Friday.
The monsoon surge in Singapore had forced the DP World Tour event to be reduced to a 54-hole event with the first round on Thursday cancelled at the Laguna National Golf Resort Club.
The 17-year-old stumbled early with a bogey on the second hole after teeing off on the back-nine 10 when the event finally got underway on Friday morning. However, he recovered brilliantly with a birdie on the 12th hole before making five straight pars and getting to one-under at the turn with another birdie on 18.
Lee, who secured his place at the event as the top local amateur through its qualifying event, picked up further gains on holes four, six and seven before dropping another shot on the ninth hole.
“It was a good day out there. I can say I’m satisfied with my round today and I hope I can continue this flow. I’m feeling quite calm, so that’s good.
“I had a couple of chip-ins so it really made my round feel slightly better. I’m happy to be here. I didn’t really have any expectations.
“I had a couple of my friends from school and friends from outside (following me during my round) so it’s nice to see them. There was a little bit of emotional backing out there,” said Lee.
Lee will start his second round in tied-24th place, four shots back of England’s Marcus Armitage and Matthew Jordan, who lead with their matching 65s.
