I tried Aldi’s new summer drinks – a £4.49 flavour is great for warm days but the viral cocktail tastes so cheap

ALDI’S new summer drinks are all over social media and with the weather finally heating up, could you think of a better time to try them?

Countless content creators are raving about the affordable ready-to-drink cocktails – and there’s three iconic flavours to choose from.

While many shoppers have urged others to ‘run’ to Aldi to nab the drinks, others have praised the much-loved supermarket for ‘slaying the game’ with the new beverages.

In particular, the Belletti Hugo Spritz has sent shockwaves through TikTok and priced at just £4.49, it’s a real steal.

But does it actually taste as good as everyone claims?

Here, Abby Wilson guzzles her way through the viral cocktails, and doesn’t hold back from sharing her honest thoughts…

Belletti Hugo Spritz

I’m not a huge drinker and you’d certainly never see me touch a beer or a whisky, but as a cocktail fan, I was excited at the thought of trying Aldi’s new booze.

A Hugo Spritz cocktail is meant to have strong notes of elderflower, but Aldi’s offering doesn’t quite deliver[/caption]

I’ve seen influencers all around the country raving about the pre-mixed Belletti Hugo Spritz, which has been praised for its refreshing taste and unbeatable value.

But has Aldi really spritzed up the summer drinks game with this tipple? If you ask me, no.

As a huge fan of elderflower and mint, with a Hugo Spritz being a cocktail I’d often reach for, I have to say, I was thoroughly disappointed with Aldi’s new bottle.

While the sparkling wine cocktail is meant to have a floral and slightly herbal flavour, all I could taste with this was cheap wine.

The classic drink, which was invented around 2005 and is believed to have been created by bartender Roland Gruber in the northern Italian town of Naturno, near the Austrian border, usually includes St-Germain elderflower liqueur (although some recipes use elderflower cordial), Prosecco, soda water and mint.

But if you ask me, there was not even a noticeable hint of elderflower and the mint taste was far too dull for my liking.

With this, according to Aldi, drinkers should “simply add ice and mint for the perfect summer refreshment”, but I’m afraid it’s one I won’t get again and will definitely be leaving on the shelf.

NHS guidelines on drinking alcohol

According to the NHS, regularly drinking more than 14 units of alcohol a week risks damaging your health.

To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level if you drink most weeks:

  • men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis
  • spread your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week
  • if you want to cut down, try to have several drink-free days each week

If you’re pregnant or think you could become pregnant, the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all to keep risks to your baby to a minimum.

Belletti Limoncello Spritz

Although things started off disappointingly with this taste test, luckily, the Belletti Limoncello Spritz made up for it.

Aldi’s Limoncello Spritz is definitely worth trying
San Carlo

Now I have to say, I’m the first to ask for a Limoncello when the shots are ordered in, so the idea of a Limoncello Spritz instantly filled me with joy.

It’s the perfect tipple on a warm summer’s day and now, I may have just found the pre-mixed cocktail that’s sure to go straight in my picnic basket.

If you want something subtle, this isn’t one for you, as it does taste reasonably strong.

If you’re looking for a summer drink without the fuss, this should definitely go on your shopping list before it sells out

Abby Wilson

It’s only 7% ABV, but if you’re looking for a cocktail with a kick, you’ll need to nab this.

A typical Italian Limoncello Spritz is made with just three ingredients – Limoncello, Prosecco and soda.

And while this tipple is slightly bitter, if you’re on the hunt for a summer drink without the fuss, this should definitely go on your shopping list before it sells out.

Considering a bottle of Limoncello doesn’t come cheap, with an average bottle costing around £16, not only is Aldi’s tempting £4.49 tipple tasty, but it’s super purse-friendly too.

Aperini Aperitivo Spritz

Now, would it really be a summer’s day without an Aperol Spritz in hand?

Aldi’s Aperini Aperitivo Spritz is very dry, but makes sipping cocktails much more straightforward

If you ask me, there’s nothing better than chilling in a pub garden on a warm day, sipping on the iconic summer favourite.

The popular three-ingredient beverage, which dates back to the 19th century, includes Prosecco, Aperol and soda and is loved by many around the globe.

It has an unmistakable orange colour and a fresh bittersweet taste and I’ll admit, Aldi’s budget offering is not a bad alternative.

Having said that, yes, an Aperol is dry, but this tipple is very, very dry.

How to save money buying alcohol

Alcohol can be pricey if you’re planning a party or hosting an event but there are ways to cut costs.

It’s always important to drink responsibly, here, Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements share some tips on getting booze for the best price.

Stocking up can mean big savings on drinks, especially if you want to buy wine or fizz.

The big supermarkets regularly offer discounts of 25% when you buy six or more bottles of wine. The promotions typically run in the lead up to occasions such as Bank Holidays, Christmas and Easter.

If you know you are going to need booze later in the year, it can be worth acting when you see offers.

Before buying your preferred drink make sure you shop around to find the best price – you can use a comparison site such as pricerunner.com or trolley.co.uk.

Don’t forget that loyalty cards can unlock better savings so make sure you factor that in too.

If you like your plonk, wine clubs can also be a good way to save money and try new varieties. You’ll usually have to pay a membership fee in return for cheaper price so work out if you will be buying enough to make the one off cost worthwhile.

If that’s a bit of you, it’s worth a try, and it’s definitely a quicker and easier alternative than mixing up cocktails.

At £5.49, it is affordable too.

It’s said to save shoppers 61% compared to Aperol – so it’s great for those looking to cut costs – and there’s no doubt that it’s much more straightforward for shoppers wanting to spritz up their summer’s day.

According to the chain, this ‘spritz-tacular’ buy offers an ‘uplifting taste of a Mediterranean summer’, and whilst I’m not totally sure I agree, it’s not bad for a pre-mixed supermarket product.

Despite this, I don’t think this high-street buy will satisfy my cravings enough, and personally, I’d rather spend five minutes making the beloved drink from scratch than stock up my fridge with this.
