‘Severance’ Season 2, Episode 10 Ending Explained: Where Do They Go Next?

“Severance” Season 2 is over and things are not looking good for Mark (Adam Scott) and Helly (Britt Lower).

Episode 10 started with innie and outie Mark finally having a conversation, and after a tense argument about what to do about saving Gemma (Dichen Lachman) came to a loose agreement to break her out. Mark S. is not convinced his outie cares much about what happens to him, Helly, Dylan (Zach Cherry) and the rest of the people below Lumon but decides to help anyway.

Mark finished Cold Harbor and put the escape plan in motion. And despite getting Gemma out safe, couldn’t bring himself to abandon Helly. Below, we break down what happened in the finale, what it could mean and what the Eagan family could be planning next.

How did “Severance” Season 2 end?

After a tense conversation between the Marks at the birthing cabin, Mark S. decided to help his outie save Gemma. He returns to Lumon and the severed floor with a simple plan — finish the Cold Harbor file, take the elevator down to the floor where Gemma is being kept (along the way flipping back to Outie Mark), bring her back to the severed floor (where both Mark S. and Ms. Casey will take over), and guide her to the emergency stairway exit where outie Mark and Gemma can escape.

Upon completion of Cold Harbor, Mark finds it hard to get away because Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) brings in a full marching band to celebrate the file’s completion. Eventually, Helly makes a move to distract and then trap Milchick in the company bathroom so Mark can make a break for the elevator. Unfortunately on the way he runs into Mr. Drummond (Darri Ólafsson) and the two duke it out in the hallway. Mark gets the upper hand thanks to the interference of resident goat lady weirdo Lorne (Gwendoline Christie). Mark holds Drummond at “gun” point using Lorne’s bolt gun.

Unfortunately for Drummond, the elevator ride down means Mark S. flips over to Mark Scout and the immediate confusion means he fires the bolt gun right into Drummond’s neck on instinct, killing him. Mark stumbles soaked in blood onto the floor and begins searching for the Cold Harbor room. After some aimless wandering he finds it and uses his tie drenched in Drummond’s blood to open the door. He coaxes the latest severed identity of Gemma to leave the room and Mark and his wife are finally reunited.

They sprint back to the elevator and embrace only for them to flip back to Mark S. and Ms. Casey while about to kiss. Awkward. They run toward the staircase and when they arrive Ms. Casey comes through and flips back to Gemma as emergency lights begin to flash through the halls. Lumon knows about the breakout and Mark is being hunted. He hesitates to follow Gemma — knowing if he does he may never be back and all the people on the severed floor may be gone for good. His choice is made harder when Helly rounds the corner at the other end of the hall — don’t worry, Dylan (Zach Cherry) and an army of marching band warriors were left to deal with Milchick in MDR.

Eventually, Mark makes up his mind to stay — essentially refusing his outie’s reunion with his wife. The season ends with Mark and Helly sprinting through the labyrinthine halls of the severed floor bathed in the red emergency lights. They’re on the run now and they don’t have a lot of places to go.

Is Helly pregnant?

Mark and Helly have technically had sex twice by the end of Season 2. Many people assume she’s pregnant with Mark’s kid. Precedence for severed identities getting pregnant was set back in the first episodes of Season 1, when a news report is played of the legal ramifications behind a woman getting pregnant due to her innie’s actions.

There are no direct reveals in the Season 2 finale that can confirm whether Helly is pregnant, but the signs certainly seem to be pointing that way. With them on the run within the severed floor, it will be interesting to see how Mark handles having a baby with an Eagan.

What was the Efficacy Test Jame Eagan was watching for?

All the work Mark did in MDR for Gemma culminated when Cold Harbor was completed. It was such a big deal that Jame Eagan (Michael Siberry) got his own viewing for an “efficacy test” of the final moments of Gemma’s trials.

This all goes back to what Lumon actually wants to do with the severed procedure. Based on the episode where we saw what Gemma had been up to since she disappeared in the Season 1 finale, most of her severed personalities created by Mark unknowingly in MDR had been facing a number of mundane tasks — dentist office, flying on a plane, writing thank you cards.

It certainly seems like they want to take the procedure to the masses, but when it comes to Lumon there is likely always something more nefarious at play.
