Check fraud scheme uncovered in Crowley, leads to arrest of woman in Lafayette
CROWLEY, La. (KLFY) -- An arrest has been made today regarding a check from one of the City of Crowley's accounts being fraudulently cashed, Crowley Police Department said.
Police said they arrested Jaslyn Gordon of Lafayette for the charges of theft over $25,000 and monetary instrument abuse.
According to officials, Mayor Chad Monceaux noticed an unauthorized check being cashed from one of the City of Crowley accounts back in March 2024. Upon further investigation, the city's accountant noticed two other separate checks from the same check number have been cashed while reconciling the city's general fund, police said.
During the investigation, police said they later discovered the original check had been issued to Office Mart in Lafayette out of the City of Crowley's General Fund. Beforehand, it has been reveal another fraudulent for almost $79,000 was deposited into Gordon's a personal account. With both checks being cashed, investigators said they were able to connect Gordon to the crime.
Gordon was arrested and booked into Acadia Parish Jail with a bond set for $125,000.
