Heung-min Son has ‘a lot of affection for Tottenham’ but South Korea is different
Heung-min Son has been speaking to the South Korean media ahead of the nation’s World Cup qualifying campaign, and he made an interesting admission about how representing his country compares to wearing the Tottenham shirt.
Son has undoubtedly already done enough to be assured of his legendary status at Tottenham, but the forward would be desperate to cap it off with a trophy.
He might not have too much time left to do so as the 32-year-old enters the final year of his contract at the North London club this summer.
Some reports have suggested that Son’s time at Tottenham could end this summer, with the player alleged to be attracting ‘strong interest’ from MLS and Saudi Pro League sides.
Heung-min Son opens up on representing South Korea
As the speculation continues to swirl over his long-term future at Spurs, the forward has now made a rather curious admission about his emotions when playing for his country versus his club.
Son confessed that wearing the colours of South Korea has always meant more to him, even though playing in the Premier League was a childhood dream.
The Tottenham captain told Sports Naver: “I think they are completely different. I have a lot of affection for Tottenham, but the national team always feels like a dream to me.
“Every time I come, I maintain that same mindset—it never changes. I always feel the responsibility to perform well. Even though I play for both, my feelings are a bit different; it’s hard to explain.
“Playing in the Premier League was a childhood dream, but representing my country is something even greater than a dream. That’s what the national team means to me. Because it’s so precious, I will once again give my absolute best and make sure to perform well.”
Will Tottenham offer Son a new contract?
With the summer fast approaching, Spurs face a difficult decision on whether to offer Son a new contract or to listen to offers for him.
The club would be aware that this might be the final window where they can get decent value for their captain, who turns 33 this July.
Ange Postecoglou has continued to sing Son’s praises and bash his critics, but there is a very real possibility that the Europa League is the last trophy that the forward has a chance to win as a Tottenham player.
