Trump’s letter to Khamenei sets Two-Month Deadline for Nuclear Deal, warns of Military Action
Trump’s letter to Khamenei sets a two-month deadline for a nuclear deal, warning that failure to negotiate could lead to potential military action by the US or Israel.
Axios news outlet reported that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was harsh in tone. The letter included a two-month deadline for a new nuclear agreement. The letter was recently delivered via an Emirati envoy to Iran’s Foreign Minister in Tehran.
It remains unclear whether the two-month deadline begins from the letter’s delivery date or from the start of negotiations. The report also notes that if Tehran rejects Trump’s offer and continues its nuclear program, the likelihood of military action by the U.S. or Israel against Iran’s nuclear facilities could significantly increase.
Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Trump proposed negotiations in the letter, while also warning about the consequences of not reaching an agreement. Prior to sending the letter, the White House shared its contents with Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Brian Hughes, spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, confirmed that Trump explicitly told Khamenei that he desired a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear dispute soon. However, he added that there were other options available if a solution could not be reached.
The European Union has also warned Iran that if an agreement is not reached by June or July, heavy new sanctions will be imposed. Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the U.S. has demanded the dismantling of Iran’s proxy groups in the region as part of efforts to revive the nuclear deal.
The ongoing tension surrounding Iran’s nuclear program continues to put the region on edge. If negotiations fail, military intervention may become the only viable option, as emphasized by both Trump and other international actors. The fate of diplomatic efforts hinges on Iran’s response to the U.S. and international pressure in the coming months.
The international community, including the U.S. and European powers, is determined to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, but the diplomatic path remains fragile. The situation is reaching a critical juncture, where either a breakthrough agreement or a military escalation seems imminent.
