Overview
Jett Williams, one of the the Mets’ 2022 first round picks, was supposed to have his breakout year in 2024. Following a successful 2023 season, where he had an .876 OPS over 534 plate appearances across three levels of the minors at age 19, Williams was rightly listed across many outlets as the Mets’ top prospect heading into 2024. His keen eye for the strike zone, strong plate discipline, and power potential at his smaller stature drew were part of a package complimented with above-average defense at shortstop and a dabble in playing center field.
Thus, 2024 came with high expectations. Unfortunately, just two weeks into the season, Williams suffered a wrist injury. The Mets tried the rehab route with the 20-year-old, but it was ultimately deemed that he needed surgery in June, essentially wiping out any hopes of progress last year.
Pre-injury, while he was playing in Double A, Williams got off to a slow start, but still kept his on-base percentage afloat at .360 through 50 plate appearances. He maintained that OBP clip post-injury, but it’s clear the wrist injury and the healing process zapped his power, finishing the season with zero home runs and nine extra-base hits through 148 PAs. A rehab stint in St. Lucie was followed with a couple of weeks in Binghamton before their season ended. To get him at-bats, the Mets had him finish the year in Triple-A, where he posted a .364/.533/.545/1.079 slash line over the week he was in Syracuse. Nearly half of his extra-base hits came in the final week of the season in the offense-happy International League.
Given the injury and his recovery in-season, Williams became a perfect candidate for the Arizona Fall League, where he appeared in 22 games and got another 101 plate appearances under his belt. He posted a modest .225/.376/.388/.764 slash line and certainly had a more healthy power output. Despite the injury that took out most of his season, he was able to end the year on a better note than it started.
2025 Outlook
Jett Williams will likely start 2025 in Triple-A, either in center field or shortstop. Luisangel Acuña—a better defensive shortstop—may start the year with the major-league club, which would open up short for Williams. Whenever Acuña gets optioned, it would make sense for Williams to get his reps in center then.
Syracuse and the International League are a haven for hitters like Williams, who get on base and have any sort of pop. As long as he’s healthy, he’ll ideally progress as he has in previous seasons, potentially warranting a call-up by the end of the season if things break right.
