Albany County launching esports learning program
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Albany County Parks and Recreation Department is launching a new esports program, the Albany County Office of the Executive announced on Tuesday. The 12-week initiative, called the STEM Esports Program, will teach students the ins and outs of a career in the esports industry.
"Esports is more than just gaming, it's an entry point into technology careers, a driver of teamwork and leadership skills, and a rapidly growing industry with real opportunities," said Albany County Executive Dan McCoy.
Through the program, students will be able to access esports equipment and learn how to create and manage their own esports organization. They will also develop skills related to broadcasting, marketing and social media management, as well as how to promote positive online communities and responsible gaming habits. According to the county, the skills will help with future opportunities in fields like computer science, digital media and game development.
"This program reflects Albany County’s commitment to youth engagement, ensuring that gaming is not just a hobby but a gateway to learning and success," McCoy said.
The initiative is the result of a joint effort between Albany County and MVP Health Care, also known as the Innovative Partnership. The partners invested $15,000 into the STEM Esports Program, which is also backed by Claim to Fame Entertainment L.L.C, a business dedicated to the upstate New York esports community.
“By supporting this Esports program alongside our partners, Albany County, we are helping to level the playing field and ensure that all students, regardless of their background, have the chance to develop valuable STEM skills and pursue their passions," said MVP Health Care Chief Digital & Information Officer Michael Della Villa. "We are so proud that, together, we are fostering a community of future leaders and innovators."
The program will begin April 2. To register, visit the Albany County Parks & Recreation website.
