Cold weather delays cherry blossoms on Portland Waterfront
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Cold, rainy weather has pushed back the dates for Portland's peak cherry blossom bloom at Waterfront Park.
The trees lining the park’s Japanese American Historical Plaza were initially predicted to reach peak bloom March 14-21. However, Portland Parks & Recreation horticulturalist Jesse Allen told KOIN 6 News that the peak bloom is now forecast to begin March 22.
“Peak bloom should begin this weekend through the early part of next week,” Allen said. “Just in time for the forecasted sunshine to return.”
KOIN 6 Meteorologist Josh Cozart said the delay could mean better cherry blossom viewing in Portland.
“The recent cooler and rainy weather has slowed the growing process slightly,” Cozart said. “This might actually be good for the longevity of the flowers. If it warms too fast, the flowers could grow and fall fast as well.”
The cherry blossom trees at Portland’s Japanese Garden are also close to blooming. Cherry blossom conditions at Portland Japanese Garden can be tracked daily through the organization’s website.
