'Very good man': Gunfire takes life of Portland dad of 3
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Kevin Rhinehart was "a very good man," his neighbor Fahad Abdiadzz said Monday. "He go to his work, take care of his kids, go back to his house. Do a barbecue here. We always say hi to each other."
Rhinehart, 33, was publicly identified as the victim in the March 9 shooting at Cascade Crossings Apartment Complex in Northeast Portland. Shortly after 7 p.m. that night, more than a dozen police units arrived at the apartments near 10500 E. Burnside, not far from the E. 102nd MAX station. He died at the scene.
Those in the area said they heard an altercation that ended with the gunfire. Portland police said the investigation is ongoing but remained tight-lipped on any details. No arrests have yet been made.
Abdiadzz said he "ran back to the house" after the shooting, but Rhinehart had already died. "I've lived here 11 years, and this has never happened."
Another neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, told KOIN 6 News she heard the shots fired.
"I heard bam, bam, bam, right up here," she said. "It's really sad that, you know, you can't sit and do your own thing without being killed, you know, or somebody bothering you or coming attacking you. It does not feel safe here. I'm looking to move and get out of Portland, period."
A small memorial of flowers and candles was set up where the shooting happened. He left behind three daughters.
"It's really unfortunate that it happened," Abdiadzz said.
