NBI launches probe into Slovak tourist’s murder on Boracay Island
AKLAN, Philippines – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has launched a separate investigation into the murder of a Slovak tourist on Boracay Island.
Police confirmed on Tuesday, March 18, that an NBI team inspected the chapel of an abandoned hotel where the 23-year-old Slovak, Michaela Mickova, was found dead on March 12. NBI investigators combed the crime scene for clues on Saturday, March 15.
Authorities have taken into custody three “persons of interest,” with one providing an affidavit about what he knows, said Malay police chief Lieutenant Colonel Mar Joseph Ravelo.
Ravelo declined to confirm or deny reports that a foreigner was suspected in the case.
“We are about 80% through with the investigation,” he said.
Police have not disclosed further details but said Mickova died from a head hematoma, with no visible wounds. The cause of the hematoma remains unclear.
Mickova’s body was cremated after an autopsy, following a request from her family in Slovakia. Her remains are set to be sent home anytime soon.
Meanwhile, Aklan 2nd District Representative Teodorico Haresco has offered a P100,000-reward for more information which could result in the resolution of the case.
The case has sparked outrage, with local women’s groups calling for justice and raising concerns over violence against women and safety in the popular tourist destination.
The Slovak’s body was already in a state of decomposition when villagers discovered the murder, and her remains showed signs of sexual assault. – Rappler.com
