NFL Rumors: Patriots Restricted Free Agent Visits AFC Team
The New England Patriots took a linebacker and an edge rusher away from the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency.
And now, the Raiders potentially could steal away a linebacker from the Patriots.
ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported Monday that restricted free agent Christian Elliss made a visit to the Raiders. The Patriots tendered Elliss at the right-of-first-refusal level prior to the start of free agency.
That would allow the Patriots to at least match the Raiders if Las Vegas feels inclined to sign Elliss an offer sheet. But if Elliss decides to join the Raiders, the Patriots will get no compensation in return since Elliss entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, per Reiss.
The Patriots claimed Elliss off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles late in the 2023 season and the 26-year-old carved out a role on New England’s defense this past season. Elliss somewhat flew under-the-radar with his play as he compiled 80 tackles — good for third-best on the team — 1.5 sacks, five passes defended, one interception and one forced fumble.
Elliss played in 49% of New England’s defensive snaps last season and also contributed on special teams, playing 60% of snaps with that unit.
The versatility provided by Elliss would suit the Patriots well, plus he is expected to be a good fit in Terrell Williams’ defensive scheme even though he’s a little undersized at 6-foot-2 and 231 pounds.
But with the Patriots signing Robert Spillane, who played the last two seasons with the Raiders, they could view him as the replacement if Elliss decides to get a big offer in free agency.
