Syria strikes Hezbollah in Lebanon after alleged killing of soldiers
After the Syrian government accused Hezbollah of killing three of its soldiers, the Syrian army launched rocket and artillery attacks on positions held by the Lebanese militant group. This escalation has raised tensions between Syria and Hezbollah, a key ally of the Iranian government.
According to a report from Syria’s state news agency (SANA) on Sunday, the Syrian Ministry of Defense stated that Hezbollah had ambushed the soldiers at the border near western Homs, capturing them and later executing them in Lebanon. The Syrian government condemned this as a “dangerous escalation” and vowed to take all necessary actions to respond to the attack.
However, Hezbollah’s media office denied any involvement in the deaths of the Syrian soldiers, rejecting the accusations as false. This has led to conflicting narratives about the responsibility for the incident, further complicating the already tense situation.
Lebanese National News Agency reported that rockets fired from Syria landed in Lebanese territories near the border, but no casualties were reported. The exchange of fire has sparked concerns over the potential for further violence and instability in the region.
The new Syrian government has stated it is in a struggle against forces aligned with Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Hezbollah, once a key ally in maintaining Assad’s power during the Syrian conflict, has seen its military capabilities severely reduced since last year’s war with Israel.
In a video speech on Sunday, transitional Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa emphasized that the Syrian government would not allow any internal or external forces to drag the country into chaos or civil war. He further declared that the remnants of the old regime had no option but to surrender immediately.
The latest confrontation between Syria and Hezbollah highlights the ongoing instability and power struggles in the region. Despite denials from Hezbollah, the situation remains volatile, with potential for further escalation.
