Teddy Sheringham says everyone at Man United desperately wanted Tottenham star
Teddy Sheringham has revealed that all of his teammates at Manchester United were desperate for the Red Devils to sign a former Tottenham midfielder, who came close to a move to Old Trafford.
Spurs lost a few top players to Man Utd in the first two decades of the Premier League as the Lilywhites were a mid-table club at the time while the Manchester side was the most formidable team in the country.
Sheringham himself might be the player whose move hurt Spurs fans the most, but the departure of Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov were also bitter pills for the supporters to swallow.
Sheringham has now revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson’s side also wanted to sign another former England international from White Hart Lane and were nearly successful in doing so.
Teddy Sheringham says Darren Anderton was in high demand
The former Spurs striker reveals that many of his Man Utd teammates were in awe of Darren Anderton and were desperate for the midfielder to be brought up north.
Anderton, who made 299 appearances for Tottenham across 12 seasons at the club, is rated by many Spurs fans as one of the most technically gifted midfielders to have graced White Hart Lane, but the 53-year-old’s injury woes prevented him from reaching the heights he should have.
Sheringham has now said on Off The Shelf Podcast: “All the Man United boys that I used to, like we played with England. When I went from Tottenham to Man United, they were like, Shaggy (Darren Anderton), he’s brilliant. And they were like, what a player, get him to come to Man United.
“And he nearly went to Man United at a time, probably after about three or four years, when, in my first spell, but he didn’t go. Probably because I said to him, don’t go, Shaggy, stay. And then two years later, I went to Man United. He was like, where are you going? Sorry, mate, I’ve got to go.”
How good would Anderton have been without his injuries at Tottenham?
As is the case with Ledley King, it is difficult not to wonder just how good Anderton would have been if not for his constant injury woes.
If that were the case, we can be certain that the attacking midfielder would have won a lot more England caps than the 30 he got in his career.
However, like with King, one can argue that if Anderton’s career was not hampered by injuries, he would have likely left Tottenham to play for one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
