Dejected Adamson takes silent treatment after Nitura’s record-setting 38 goes for naught
MANILA, Philippines – Adamson superstar rookie Shaina Nitura continued to rewrite the UAAP women’s volleyball history books after exploding for a new career-high of 38 points against UP on Sunday, March 16, at the Araneta Coliseum.
Posting a total 3 points higher than UAAP legend record-holders Alyssa Valdez of Ateneo (Season 75) and Sisi Rondina (Season 81) of UST, Nitura was once again a one-woman wrecking crew for the rebuilding Lady Falcons.
Her historic numbers, however, still weren’t enough for reeling Adamson as UP took the balanced attacking route in posting a rollercoaster five-set win, 25-15, 15-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-10, and sent the Lady Falcons to their fourth straight loss to end the Season 87 first round with a 2-5 record.
Nitura and the rest of the Adamson crew obviously took the beating hard on the chin, as the Lady Falcons coaches like chief mentor JP Yude and players all begged off from postgame interviews after about an hour in the locker room.
In a way, it was still an understandable reaction from the Lady Falcons, as they have yet to find any consistent support for Nitura since she took the UAAP world by storm with a historic 33-point rookie debut against Ateneo.
Since then, the 20-year-old phenom has posted point totals of 16 in a sweep loss against La Salle, 18 in a sweep win over UE, 28 in a four-set loss against Adamson, 24 in another four-set defeat versus FEU, and a season-low 13 in another sweep setback against defending champion NU prior to the 38-point bomb.
Heading to the second round of the eliminations, there remains absolutely no doubt that Nitura can keep up her veteran-like savvy against the best of the best, but the spotlight now burns hot on Adamson’s supporting crew and coaches to unlock the potential of everyone else around their prized star.
