UN Security Council to vote on UNAMA Mission extension in Afghanistan
The United Nations Security Council has announced that it will hold a vote on the draft resolution regarding the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The decision comes amid ongoing concerns about Afghanistan’s security and humanitarian situation, which remains a critical issue for the international community.
According to the Security Council’s report on Saturday, March 15, the mandate of UNAMA is up for a vote to extend it until March 17, 2026, shaping its role in addressing Afghanistan’s humanitarian and political challenges. The council will meet on Monday, March 17, to finalize the vote, as the current UNAMA mission officially ends that day.
The Security Council has emphasized that the mission of UNAMA will be extended without any changes to its existing priorities and duties. The core objectives of the mission will remain intact, ensuring that its focus on humanitarian aid, human rights, and governance continues as before.
The draft resolution presented by the Security Council covers key issues, including human rights, particularly women’s rights, the economic situation, peace and security, counterterrorism efforts, drug trafficking, and the situation of refugees.
The Taliban have previously expressed dissatisfaction with UNAMA’s role in Afghanistan, stating that its mission has not been effective. They have criticized the UN’s approach, arguing that it has not significantly contributed to improving the situation in the country under their rule.
The extension of UNAMA’s mandate has usually been approved by consensus or majority vote in the UN Security Council. However, some members have debated its priorities and engagement with Afghanistan’s rulers. Despite this, many believe the resolution will likely pass due to Afghanistan’s urgent need for international aid and UN support.
UNAMA was established in 2002 at the Afghan government’s request and with Security Council approval. It has played a key role in supporting peace, coordinating humanitarian aid, monitoring human rights, and strengthening democratic institutions in Afghanistan.
