BBC star becomes emotional during goodbye message to viewers following show’s axe after 25 years
A BBC star became emotional during a goodbye message to viewers following his show’s axe after 25 years.
It was revealed back in October that the corporation had taken the decision to stop making BBC Click.
The weekly show covering developments in the world of technology, began airing in 2000.
It was hosted by Martin Lewis‘ wife Lara Lewington and Spencer Kelly, who got to say the farewell message during Saturday morning’s final ever show.
As he referred to the last segment on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact, Spencer said: “Every so often, we reach a tipping point in certain technology where many, many new things suddenly become possible and it does feel like we are reaching one of that milestones.
“Now AI is starting to change the world and the next generation will both be using it as a tool and facing the consequences of it getting better and better at the tasks we once thought were uniquely human.”
He added: “I wonder how different their world will be to that of the early 21st Century when I first welcomed you all to Click, 1,000 programmes ago.”
Viewers then saw a shot of him when he first presented the show in 2006 before it transitioned into how he is today.
He continued emotionally: “But that is it from me on Click. It has been such a privilege to see the things that I’ve seen and bring those stories to you.
“I have had the time of my life and I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride too. So thank you so much for watching and goodbye.”
Back in October, Lara announced the shock news in an emotional statement on X.
She wrote: “Here’s to the future… some PERSONAL NEWS: After 15 years of covering some of the greatest technology on earth, sadly in a few months BBC Click will gaze into the future no more.
“I’ve many exciting plans, documentaries to finish, being AI agony aunt on @lorraine and a compelling future health tech related project coming next year.
“The BBC gave us an amazing opportunity to cover the tech that has, and will transform our lives, in ways we could never have imagined.
“It is a shame to see our dear show come to an end at this moment of AI transformation and incredible acceleration in innovation and possibility, but such are the economic constraints.”
A BBC spokesperson confirmed: “Our flagship Tech show, “Click”, will be relaunched and renamed “Tech Now”, shifting from its traditional TV format to one where the films work best for digital.”
BBC Click is available on BBC iPlayer.
