What to watch this weekend March 14, 2025: TV awards contenders
Move over, Severance, there’s a new thriller in town.
Oscar and Emmy nominee Brian Tyree Henry stars in Dope Thief, the television debut of screenwriter Peter Craig (you may know him for his work on small indie movies like Top Gun: Maverick and The Batman). Produced by Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott and based on a novel by Dennis Tafoya, the eight-episode crime drama — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Apple TV+ — follows two longtime friends and petty criminals (Henry and Narcos' Wagner Moura) who make their living by posing as DEA agents and ripping off Philadelphia drug dealers. Following a tip from an acquaintance, the pair attempt to branch out and rob a meth lab in rural Pennsylvania, but they soon discover they've stumbled upon a drug-smuggling operation that is far bigger and much more dangerous than anything they've ever experienced. Scott helms the first episode, adding heft to a darkly humorous script, thus making Dope Thief the awards contender to watch this weekend.

Of course, if you haven't yet sold your soul to the Apple gods, other contenders include:
- Adolescence: This four-part limited series from co-creators Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham (who also stars) will no doubt draw comparisons to Apple's Defending Jacob, as it tells a similar story about a teen (newcomer Owen Cooper) accused of murdering his classmate. But Adolescence sets itself apart through compelling central performances and a unique style and structure. Playing out in real time, each of the four hour-long episodes is one uncut take, making for a fascinating, if sometimes difficult, watch as the drama unfolds. All four episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
- Everybody's Live With John Mulaney: Is it strange to recommend a live late-night talk show days after airing? Probably! And yet, here we are. After test-driving a daily live format last spring during Netflix's annual comedy festival, Emmy winner John Mulaney is back with a new weekly show. The first guests include Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Michael Keaton and musician and activist Joan Baez, but the real stars are the lower thirds. The series premiere is now streaming on Netflix.
- Top Chef: The Emmy-winning competition series heads north of the border for its 22nd season (subtitled Destination Canada), with stops in Toronto, Calgary, Prince Edward Island, and plenty more places in between. Along for the ride are 15 contestants vying for the largest prize package in the show's long history, as well as host Kristen Kish and judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons. The season premiere is now streaming on Peacock.
