03/14/2025: A Friday Winner, Rain Late Sunday
The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologists Matt Mackie and Kevin Appleby:
We have a great weather day lined up for us to round out the work week! Temperatures climb through the weekend, but an approaching cold front looks to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms to the region later Sunday. While briefly cooler to start next week, temperatures quickly climb back into the 60s for highs.
High temperatures climb some 15-20 degrees above normal under no shortage of sunshine today. Albany should creep up a few degrees above 60 before all is said and done.
A few clouds, particularly into Saturday morning, should keep temperatures milder overnight compared to the past several nights which featured mainly 20 degree temperatures. This time around, 30s will be quite common, with only a few northern/outlying areas dropping below freezing.
Low-level moisture creeping up from the south may give the valleys a cloudy start to Saturday while the mountainous areas enjoy plentiful sunshine. Sunshine will become more universal by late-morning, but that's a temporary trend as cloud cover will increase from the west/southwest ahead of our next storm system. Even with more cloud cover, the vast majority of the region should remain dry until at least Saturday evening/night, where isolated showers and sprinkles are possible. It will turn breezy, once again producing a day with well-above average temperatures as has been quite common lately.
Temperatures tick upwards Sunday as we turn windy (and even a bit muggy!). The morning could feature a rain shower or two, but of larger significance will be more widespread and locally heavy rainfall later in the day just ahead of a cold front. While guidance is still a bit divided on precise timing of the heavy rain, all of the data coming into the weather center keeps the bulk of the rain to our west until at least 2 PM Sunday afternoon.
From there, plan on having the umbrella ready to go! While the severe threat is low, it is nonzero with these thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the News10 viewing area under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 out of 5) for severe weather Sunday. The main concern, on top of pockets of heavy rain, is for a few wind gusts 60+ MPH possible in association with these storms. Again, it's a rather low risk, but it is our first severe risk worth tracking this year.
Temperatures flirt with 70 again on Sunday before taking a brief step back on Monday - still above average, but easily the coolest day of the next 7. Morning clouds will give way to more PM sunshine, with a bit of a cooler breeze kicking in as well.
It's a quick temperature turnaround as highs look to reach 60 once again as soon as Tuesday. The breeze returns again on Wednesday, helping temperatures push 70 again. Showers are possible Thursday, particularly later in the day. Clouds and the threat of rain should keep highs a bit lower than Wednesday's 70 degree flirtation. While not on the 7-day forecast, a return to near-normal temperatures is on the horizon beyond Thursday's rain chance.
