Two Tottenham players suffer England disappointment
Thomas Tuchel has announced his first England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Lativia, and while one Tottenham man has made the cut, two others would be extremely disappointed to miss out on a call-up.
Three Tottenham players faced a nervous wait in anticipation of the squad announcement. Djed Spence, James Maddison and Dominic Solanke would have all felt they had a chance of making it into the 26-man squad.
James Maddison admitted he had spoken to Thomas Tuchel, and the attacking midfielder would have felt on the back of the match-winning performance in Tottenham’s 3-1 win against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday that he would be at the forefront of the German coach’s thinking.
Meanwhile, Spence was nominated for February’s Premier League Player of the Month award and would have felt that he had done enough over recent months to earn his first call-up.
No England call-up for Djed Spence and James Maddison
Spence will have to wait longer to make his bow for the Three Lions, with the full-back failing to make it into Tuchel’s first squad.
Maddison, who has missed out on the last couple of squads, also finds himself out of the 23-man list despite his impressive run of form of late with Tuchel naming Ajax’s Jordan Henderson ahead of him.
However, Dominic Solanke, who returned from his injury lay-off just last week, has been called up once again, with the centre-forward being the sole Tottenham representative in the squad.
What Djed Spence had said about possible England call-up
Spence has good reason to be hard done by, given the kind of form he has been in this season, but the defender’s comments earlier this week indicate that he is not really going to let his non-selection affect his confidence.
Spence made it clear his focus will remain on doing well for Tottenham, irrespective of whether he is called up to the national set-up or not.
When asked about the possibility of making his England debut later this month, the 24-year-old said: “Who doesn’t want to play for their country? That’s something I’m looking forward to.
“If I get called up, happy days, if I don’t, I’ll just keep working hard. I haven’t heard from anyone. I’m just focusing on right now, I just want to keep playing well and help the team win games.”
