Morning Report: Alexander Volkanovski on fighting Diego Lopes at UFC 314: ‘I can still take out these new guys’
Alexander Volkanovski has a point to prove at UFC 314.
Next month, Volkanovski fights Diego Lopes for the vacant featherweight title in the main event of UFC 314. A long-reigning champion over the division, Volkanovski lost his title to Ilia Topura at UFC 298; however, Topuria recently vacated the belt as he moves up to lightweight to pursue a new title. And while Volkanovski would have like the chance to get that loss to Topuria back, “The Great” isn’t too upset with this consolation prize.
“I’m over losses,” Volkanovski told ESPN. “I’m going to get them back. I’m going to get the belt back, I’m going to defend, and that’s just going to add to my legacy, add to the story. Even that [Topuria rematch], maybe we can get a rematch further down the track. Maybe it’s all meant to be. ...
“That’s what we thought it was going to be. I did the faceoff. Originally, early, that’s what I wanted. Then it got to a point where I didn’t know what was happening. You’re hearing [Topuria] even talk about maybe moving up. I’m like, ‘Is this just negotiations? What’s going on?’ I didn’t think too much of it, so we’re still game-planning for Ilia. Then hearing could it maybe be Lopes? So by this stage I’m like, just give me anyone now. My first option, obviously, would have been Ilia, but then it got a point where I don’t care. Just make sure I’m fighting for a title at this date, because I don’t want to wait any longer.”
Volkanovski was one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world when Topuria won the title off him, and is already a lock for the UFC Hall of Fame. But Volkanovski still wants to keep adding to his already impressive resume, and if a rematch with Topuria isn’t on the table, this is the next best option.
“I thought interim was going to maybe be an option,” Volkanovski said. “It’s even one up from that. I’m fighting for the actual title against a young, hungry guy. I want to prove — I want to get that win back but I also want to prove I can beat this new school. I want to do that with Ilia. He’s gone but I can still do that with the new school. Part of my comeback story is I can still take out these new guys. Trust me. So that’s still good for my story.
“Lopes, he’s young, hungry, on a tear at this moment. I go out and do that and be like, wow, Volk’s still got it.”
And to do that, Volkanovski is pulling out all the stops. At 36 years old, Volkanovski acknowledges that he likely doesn’t have too much time left in the sport, and so he’s bringing a new level of focus to his preparation for UFC 314 to ensure he makes the most out of this final run.
“I probably could have done some things better,” Volkanovski said of his previous fight preparation. “... I could have done better with my nutrition. I decided to do that this time. Fourteen weeks out from the fight, no cheat meals. Not even a cheat meal and everyone knows I like my food. I want to bring that weight down, I want to be moving fast. I want to feel sharp. I want to feel like me. I don’t want to wait until two weeks out from the fight, ‘Alright, I feel sharp again, but I had this whole camp of me moving around like a slob.’ I didn’t want that, so I was like, alright, we’ll get stuck into it.
“Just making better decisions, keeping myself accountable, not only in the gym but outside the gym, which is something that’s a little bit different. ... Just me understanding that if you want to have this one last crack at the belt and defend and be active and make the most of this last crack, let’s do it properly.”
UFC 314 takes place on April 12 at Kaseya Center in Miami.

Lucas here was polite so I’ll give you guys the truth that makes people mad for whatever reason. Every ufc fight I had I was paid more then the contract I signed. Yes it didn’t come close to 50% of their earnings but in the real world I’ll take 17% of something over 50% of 0 https://t.co/jWpH0fhZ3a

FINAL THOUGHTS
I’m with Volk, this is as good of a consolation prize as we could’ve hoped for. I still think it’s incredibly lame for Topuria to just bail on the division, but this is at least a damn good fight.
