Patriots Fans Should Be Cautiously Optimistic About These Mike Vrabel Comments
The Patriots were active during the start of free agency, but the majority of the additions had one thing in common.
New England’s defense was expected to be a focus given Mike Vrabel’s history, and it did exactly that. However, it might have been too geared in one direction for some fans.
The only offensive additions the Patriots reportedly agreed to were wide receiver Mack Hollins, offensive tackle Morgan Moses and quarterback Joshua Dobbs. Hollins is a perfectly fine wideout, but New England needs to do more to help ease Drake Maye into his sophomore season.
Vrabel addressed that concern in a news conference Thursday.
“We’ll continue to target,” Vrabel told reporters, per a team-provided transcript. “Mack Hollins will be in here (Friday). He’s a wide receiver. But we’ll continue to look at the wide receiver position as it relates to free agency, explore every option with other teams, and potentially then we’ll get to the point where we’re looking at the draft. There’s just a lot of time, and I know that everybody is like, it’s over in free agency. It’s never over. And Zo, wherever Alonzo (Highsmith) is, I don’t know, but he keeps reminding me and everybody else of that, because he’s been around a lot of times. He’s like, there’s players that are going to become available, whether it be now or whether it be in May or after training camp. He’s like, I’ve seen it enough to know that there’s going to be someone that’s currently not on our roster that’s going to help us win a game this year. He’s just not in Foxboro.”
If you’re a Patriots fan, that should have you slightly worried. Cooper Kupp reportedly wants to get his business done as quickly as possible, and the patient approach the Patriots seem to want to doesn’t seem to track with that.
Vrabel also noted that he wants players who want to be at One Patriot Place. It’s unknown if Kupp wants to spend the next phase of his career with a rebuilding team, and that also could complicate a trade.
Stefon Diggs is also available in the market, but he’s coming off a season-ending injury. That could mean the Patriots will look to the 2025 NFL Draft to help solve their offensive issues, and well, we saw how that tactic failed last year. That might be their best option if a free agent or trade partner isn’t interested in doing business with the Patriots.
Still, the players Vrabel acquired were good and some were exceptional like Milton Williams and Carlton Davis. We’re by no means saying you should give up on the fact that the Patriots will be out on a marquee talent. However, Vrabel’s comments don’t inspire great confidence that a significant addition will be made right away.
