Aston Villa Cruise Past Club Brugge into Champions League Quarter-Finals
Aston Villa delivered a commanding second half performance at Villa Park, securing us a victory over Club Brugge in the second leg of our Champions League cup tie. With a 3-1 advantage from the first leg in Belgium, we entered the match with confidence and wasted no time in the second half putting the tie beyond doubt, advancing to the quarter-finals with a 6-1 aggregate triumph.
The turning point came early when Club Brugge’s Kyriani Sabbe received a red card in the early part of the first half for denying Marcus Rashford a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Down to 10 men, Club Brugge seemed to be the more confidant side of the two. You could say we maintained a cautious approach in the first half, but the introduction of Marco Asensio at halftime shifted the game decisively in our favour.
The momentum continued as Ian Maatsen scored his first goal for the Villa, capitalising on excellent work from Morgan Rogers. Asensio then sealed the deal with his second goal, underlining his growing importance to Emery’s squad since arriving on loan from Paris Saint-Germain—our next opponents in the quarter-finals. The Spaniard’s two goals showcased his knack for delivering in big moments, a trait that will be vital as we prepare to face his parent club.
Emery’s European pedigree shone through once again, with his tactical adjustments and substitutions proving pivotal. Our dominance and relentless pressure in the second half left Club Brugge with little to offer despite a very spirited first-half performance which they had the better of. This victory marks another milestone in our remarkable Champions League run, our first in over 40 years, and sets up an amazing clash with PSG.
For the Villa fans, it’s was a night to savor—a testament to the club’s transformation under Emery. UTV
