Watervliet man pleads not guilty to alleged child assault
WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A Saratoga County judge arraigned a Watervliet man on second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child charges on Monday. The county DA's office said Jayvion Smith, 21, pleaded not guilty.
Police arrested Smith in June 2024 after he allegedly assaulted a child who was in his care in May, leaving several bruises. Police added that the bruising was from disciplining the child.
If convicted, Smith faces a possible minimum sentence of two years to a maximum of seven years for the second-degree assault charge. The charge of endangering the welfare of a child has a potential sentence of one year in prison or three years of probation. Smith is scheduled to return to court on April 14 at 9:30 a.m.
