City of Albany hosting salt distribution for residents
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The City of Albany Department of General Services will be giving away salt for Albany residents. The distributions will happen starting at noon until 6 p.m. and again on Thursday, February 20 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
According to Mayor Kathy Sheehan, these distributions will allow Albany residents a chance to get salt on a first come, first serve basis since many stores regionally have been running out. On Friday, Gov. Kathy Hochul issued an executive order that declared a state disaster emergency in response to the salt shortages. Many municipalities began mixing sand and rock salt because their supply is dwindling as well.
The salt will be distributed at four locations around the city. Residents are asked to bring their own container and provide a proof of residency.
Locations include:
- Westland Hills (Anthony Street), off Colvin Avenue
- Ridgefield Park (parking lot) off Patridge Street
- Krank Park (parking lot)
- Arbor Hill Softball Field (parking lot)
Sheehan said salt will be provided in increments less than five gallons.
According to the city, per city code all property owners or residents are responsible for removing snow and ice from the sidewalks next to their property. If it's not in compliance with the code within 24 hours of the last snowfall, the property owner will be issued a bill for removal and charged a fine.
