Abortion is the Opposite of Valentine’s Day. It’s a Failure to Love
To my second-grade mind, it was one of the most important days of the year.
Valentine’s Day was an opportunity to connect with my fellow classmates. I carefully selected two groups of Valentines—one for the girls, the other for the boys. And I was eager to receive the Valentines that came my way.
This Valentine’s Day, I am struck by the number of students who are missing because of abortion. Research indicates as many as a million preborn children are aborted in the U.S. on a yearly basis. A million—think of that.

A million beautiful souls who aren’t here today.
A million sons and daughters who have been lost.
A million grandchildren who will never get to see their grandparents.
Abortion is a failure to love. It is to resort to violence to respond to a crisis of faith and trust. It is perpetuated by an industry that is determined to increase abortion totals nationwide.
How do we respond to the abortion crisis in our midst? The answer is to love. To love the mother who is in a difficult situation. To love the unborn, unseen child. To love the father who is facing a quandary. To love the family as the unrepeatable, dynamic creation it is.
So I approach Valentine’s Day as a challenge—to do whatever I can, within the sphere of my influence, to spread love and to preserve life. I spiritually adopt a preborn child, promising to pray for her in the midst of the struggle. And I live with the hope that we can restore a culture of life, one heart at a time.
