Oakland sideshow shooting leaves one dead, two wounded
OAKLAND — One man was killed and two other people were wounded in a shooting Sunday night at an Eastlake district sideshow that erupted after a spectator was hit by a participating vehicle, authorities said.
Police are still trying to identify the man killed.
The two wounded, a 23-year-old Oakland man and a 24-year-old woman, were in stable condition.
Police believe the three were not the intended targets but were hit by stray bullets. It was not immediately known if they knew each other.
The shooting, which activated a gunshot detection alert system, happened about 7:46 p.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of East 12th Street.
Authorities said an illegal sideshow was happening there that was being observed by scores of spectators, including the people shot.
Authorities said one car involved in the sideshow was doing illegal “donuts” when it hit another spectator. It was not immediately known how badly that person was injured.
But that collision prompted at least one other person in the crowd to begin shooting at the vehicle, authorities said.
The vehicle was struck several times by the gunfire and the three people shot were hit by stray bullets, authorities said.
No one in the car was apparently injured.
The three gunshot victims got their own transportation to a hospital where the still unidentified man was pronounced deceased.
The bullet-riddled car that hit the spectator was later recovered in the area, authorities said.
Police have not made any arrests and have not released any suspect information.
Sideshows in Oakland have been marred over the years by violent incidents, including prior homicides, non-fatal shootings and robberies.
The fatal shooting Sunday is the 11th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated nine homicides in the city.
