Another Sequel: Chiefs to face Eagles in Super Bowl rematch
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Another sequel it is. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are set to face each other in a Super Bowl rematch.
There's a lot of new faces on both sides but key pieces remain the same. Both teams have been two of the most successful franchises within the past decade with the Chiefs forming a dynasty, winning three Super Bowls in five seasons. The Eagles are appearing in their second Super Bowl in three seasons, losing to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.
For the Chiefs, they find themselves in the Super Bowl once again in a season that included a plethora of one score wins (17 straight) and timely plays when the team needed them most.
While it may not always be pretty, the Chiefs have excelled at situational football, with all three phases making clutch plays on a consistent basis, whether it be a field goal block, a turnover, a perfectly timed blitz or a huge 3rd down conversion.
Patrick Mahomes has also continued to deliver as one of the all-time greatest clutch performers in sports. The trio of him, Travis Kelce and Chris Jones have been the anchors of this dynasty.
For Philadelphia, they reached the Super Bowl on the backs of the league's best rushing attack and stingy defense.
Saquon Barkley has had one of the best seasons for a running back in NFL history, eclipsing 2,000 yards and almost surpassing Eric Dickerson's all-time rushing yards record. He has ripped off a multitude of big time runs in the postseason, continuing to prove himself as one of the best free agent signings in NFL history.
Jalen Hurts, while his numbers may not always gaudy, has continued to win his entire NFL career and is one of the league's best QB's, beating teams with is arm and his legs.
The Eagles also revamped their defense and it paid off as they lead the NFL in forced fumbles and were sixth in turnover differential. They arguably have the most well-rounded roster in football.
With a win, the Chiefs can cement themselves as the greatest team in NFL history, as they'd be the first team to ever three-peat and the first the first major professional sports team to win three straight championships since the Los Angeles Lakers from 2000-2002.
"It's just so hard to get to the Super Bowl. I don't take it for granite. To be able to do it again at Arrowhead is special," Mahomes said postgame. "I'm glad I get to be apart of Chiefs Kingdom and here in Kansas City, cause these are moments that I'll have for the rest of my life."
Kickoff for Super Bowl LIX will kickoff at 5:30 p.m. CT.
