It would be pointless to sack Postecoglou, says former Spurs manager
Tim Sherwood believes that most Spurs fans do not want to see Ange Postecoglou get the sack and instead want to see changes at the very top of the club.
Is Ange Postecoglou a dead man walking?
Tottenham’s latest loss to Leicester City has left the Lilywhites staring at the possibility of a potential relegation battle, with no sign of the team’s form turning around.
While the injury crisis has undoubtedly played a big role in Tottenham’s struggles over recent months, many would feel that they should still be beating Leicester, who were winless in seven matches coming into Sunday’s fixture.
This latest loss could well prove to be the final nail in the coffin for Postecoglou, who looked a beaten man after the final whistle.
Tim Sherwood says Spurs fans do not want Postecoglou sacked
Sherwood believes that the majority of Tottenham fans do not want to see another manager being sacked, pointing out that some very good managers have failed at N17 over recent years.
The former Spurs interim boss claimed that the supporters are tired of the revolving managerial door and would rather see a change in ownership.
Sherwood told Optus Sport: “They’re talking about the ownership, they aren’t talking about a change of manager again. What’s the point of changing the manager? You change the manager, who are you going to?
“They’ve had the trophy managers, they’ve had the Jose Mourinho… they’ve had the [Antonio] Conte’s – whose top of the league in Italy – you’ve had Nuno [Espirito Santo] who got booed and rushed out of town there at Tottenham and he’s third or fourth in the Premier League, ripping it up at Nottingham Forest.
“They’ve had managers who are not bad managers. What [the fans] are suggesting is changing the ownership. The only way you change the ownership is if Daniel Levy or whoever decide to leave…It’s a magnificent football club with the training ground and a stadium, but on the pitch them fans want success, that’s what they want.
“Changing the manager will do nothing I would suggest. I don’t think it’s right to change the manager. They can win the Europa League, end up in the Champions League, win the Carabao Cup, it’s the best season ever.”
Levy’s mistakes should not shield Postecoglou from criticism
There is no doubt that Daniel Levy has made his fair share of mistakes over the years and one can understand why many Spurs fans have had enough of him, especially given the inactivity so far this window.
However, that should not take away from the fact that Postecoglou is struggling tactically in the Premier League. The high rate of muscle injuries is a clear pattern under the Australian and there is no evidence to suggest that they will stop.
While one can certainly make the case that Postecoglou deserves a chance to show what he can do with a fully fit squad, Levy’s mistakes should be used as a shield to protect the 59-year-old, who has been found wanting at this level.
