polio Vaccination Campaign launches in 16 provinces of Afghanistan
The organization “Polio Free” has announced that a polio vaccination campaign was launched on Monday, January 27 in 16 provinces across the country.
In a statement released on its social media plat from X, the organization mentioned that the campaign will continue for three days in the provinces of Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan, Zabul, Paktia, Paktika, Khost, Ghazni, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Nuristan, Kabul, Baghlan, Herat, and Badghis.
The organization has urged citizens to cooperate with vaccinators to ensure that all children receive their polio doses.
Recently, public health officials in Baghlan province reported a newly detected case of polio in Pul-e-Khumri city, raising concerns about the persistence of the disease.
Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only two countries in the world where polio has not been eradicated and continues to claim young victims.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a total of 72 polio cases were recorded last year, with 23 cases reported in Afghanistan and 49 in Pakistan.
Last month, at least 5.3 million children under the age of five in 11 provinces of Afghanistan were vaccinated against polio in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and international organizations. Despite these efforts, the presence of polio cases highlights the challenges in reaching all children, especially in conflict-affected areas.
Continuous vaccination campaigns and public awareness initiatives remain crucial in eradicating polio in Afghanistan. Cooperation between the government, health organizations, and local communities is essential to overcoming barriers and ensuring the safety and well-being of children in the country.
