Canadian Veteran released from Taliban prison
Melanie Joly, the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, has announced the release of David Lavery, a veteran of the country, from Taliban prison.
On Monday, Joly wrote on her X/Twitter page that she had spoken with Lavery and that he had now reunited with his family in Qatar.
The Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, in her message, expressed gratitude to her Qatari counterpart for facilitating the release of this Canadian citizen.
Meanwhile, the French news agency reported that Lavery was released from Taliban captivity after two months in prison, with Qatar’s mediation.
According to reports, the Canadian soldier had helped evacuate 100 Afghans three years ago during the withdrawal of the United States from Afghanistan.
Additionally, he had managed the private security company “Raven Rae Consulting Services” in Kabul for several years. The reason for Lavery’s arrest by the Taliban remains unclear.
He was detained by the Taliban on November 17 of last year while entering Kabul airport. It is worth mentioning that the Taliban had also released two American prisoners a few days ago through Qatar’s mediation.
The release of David Lavery highlights the ongoing diplomatic efforts and Qatar’s pivotal role in negotiating with the Taliban. However, the circumstances surrounding his arrest and the conditions of his detention remain unclear, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in Afghanistan. This incident also underscores the broader challenges faced by those involved in humanitarian and security operations in the region.
