Sports Briefs: Terra Linda girls claim gold on the mat
Terra Linda High’s girls wrestling squad came home with a pair of gold medals from the Malinda Ripley Invitational at Deer Valley High on Saturday. Terra Linda freshman Irene Stoilova pinned Foothill junior Aarya Mishra to win the 117-pound championship. Trojans sophomore Kylie Lee won the 122-pound class with a pin against Foothill sophomore Tanya Rajarathinam in 51 seconds.
Yuritzi Sanchez Zapata of San Marin finished second at 172 pounds, and the Mustangs’ Gianna Robarge (237) placed third with a pinfall win in the medal round. Sophomore Catania Dekeyrel of San Marin placed fourth at 147 pounds.
In a matchup of MCAL rivals at 112 pounds, Trojans senior Olivia Zabierek won a technical fall over Novato sophomore Molly Lloyd Hutchinson to take third place.
The Hornets’ Mercedes Garcia (137) and Rebecca Mark (142) both placed third, and Novato’s Kasandra Santos Suaso (107) placed fourth as the Hornets sophomore beat Livermore’s Liliana Garcia in the medal round.
- Redwood High sophomore Dylan Morton (26-11) pinned Monte Vista junior Blake Lewis in 54 seconds to clinch fifth place in the 128-pound class at the Puma Classic in Santa Rosa on Saturday.
Girls soccer
Addie Covey found the back of the net twice to guide Tam to a 2-1 victory against Colfax on Saturday. Covey’s first goal was unassisted and her second one was assisted by Lauren Williard. Tam (9-3-5) conceded a late goal but closed out the game to get the win.
- Sophie Arnal scored in second half stoppage time to help Branson (13-2-2) rally for a 1-1 tie against Sonoma Academy on Saturday. Arnal’s goal came following a corner taken by Sophia Duran.
Boys soccer
Mateo Hale assisted one goal and scored another to help lead Tam to a 3-1 win against Sonoma Valley on Saturday. Hale set up the first goal for Oscar Freau then scored the second on an assist by Noah Pederson. Marco Caruso capped the scoring for Tam (5-4-4) off an assist by Buba Mane.
Track and Field
San Rafael’s Ellie McCuskey-Hay took first place in three events and second in another while representing the Marin Waves Track Club at Saturday’s Pittsburg Winter Championships qualifier. McCuskey-Hay turned in her best time of the season in the 60 meter sprint, with a first-place time of 7.64 seconds. She also won the 150 (18.33) and 300 (40.51) and took second in the long jump with a season-best 18 feet, 5 inches. She qualified for the Winter Championships in all four events.
The Waves’ Grace Bramble took third in the long jump (14-9) and second in the triple jump (32-11), while Indeya Sanders qualified in the 60 (8.21) with a 10th-place finish and the 300 (43.34) as she finished fifth. Luna Dana earned a qualifying berth as she placed 21st in the 60 (8.51).
College baseball
Alexander Cruz doubled and scored in the top of the seventh inning, but the Mariners’ rally fell short as College of Marin suffered a 5-4 road loss to Diablo Valley on Saturday to split their season-opening home-and-home series. Adrian Ruiz had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Mariners (1-1).
