Iran’s Foreign Minister arrives in Kabul
On Sunday morning, January 26, the Iranian Embassy in Afghanistan announced that Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, arrived in Kabul leading a political and economic delegation.
Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, described Abbas Araghchi’s trip to Kabul as a move to pursue Iran’s interests.
He wrote on X: “This trip is within the framework of the neighborhood policy and aligned with the Foreign Ministry’s core mission to pursue our nation’s interests through engagement and addressing shared concerns and interests.”
He further explained that Araghchi’s visit to Afghanistan is “within the framework of the neighborhood policy and aligned with the Foreign Ministry’s core mission to pursue our country’s national interests through engagement and addressing shared interests and concerns.”
Last week, the Iranian Embassy in Kabul had hinted at the possibility of Araghchi’s visit to Afghanistan. This trip comes amid ongoing tensions over border disputes, disagreements about what Iran refers to as its water rights from the Helmand River, drug trafficking from Afghanistan, and the impact of mass migrations, all of which occasionally overshadow relations between Iran and the Taliban.
Araghchi’s visit to Kabul underscores the significance of addressing shared concerns and fostering dialogue. This trip could serve as a key moment in improving regional relations and navigating mutual challenges.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul in August 2021, Iran has maintained close relations with the group but has not officially recognized the Taliban regime.
