Man in critical condition after taking hostage, firing on officers: KBI
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday night into Saturday morning.
Atchison Police Department says that around 5:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to North 9th Street on reports of an armed person breaking into an apartment. When officers arrived, one had multiple shots fired at him.
While the shots struck the officer's patrol vehicle, the officer was not struck. The suspect, identified as Bryson McCray, 36, of St. Joseph, then fled back into a residence and backup was called to the scene.
During the incident, Atchison PD says that they learned a woman who McCray knew was being held inside the residence. Police then requested the Kansas Highway Patrol's Special Response Team and KBI High Risk Warrant Team.
While officers were attempting to negotiate with McCray, they say more shots were fired at officers.
KBI says that preliminary information shows that around 2:30 a.m., a rescue attempt was made. During that attempt, McCray and the hostage were briefly separated. A KHP trooper fired at McCray, striking him and the hostage was safely rescued.
Life-saving measures were performed for McCray both at the scene and at an area hospital. McCray was also transported to a Kansas City hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The KBI will be offering victim support services to the rescued hostage.
This is an ongoing investigation, FOX4 will provide updates as they're made available.
