New Man City signing Khusanov makes horrible start with costly mistake against Chelsea
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — New Manchester City signing Abdukodir Khusanov endured a horrible introduction to the Premier League when his mistake gifted Chelsea a goal inside three minutes on Saturday.
Khusanov completed a 40 million euros ($41.5 million) move from Lens this week and was quickly handed his debut by manager Pep Guardiola at Etihad Stadium.
He got an attempted header to City goalkeeper Ederson all wrong, with his underhit pass seized on by Nicolas Jackson. With Ederson exposed, Jackson passed to Noni Madueke to fire into an open net.
The 20-year-old Khusanov looked shocked as cameras focused on him.
Khusanov has played 18 times for Uzbekistan and was the first person from his country to play in the French league.
Khusanov was substituted in the 54th with the score 1-1 and was applauded by the home crowd. He was greeted and embraced on the sideline by Guardiola.
City also gave a debut to Omar Marmoush, who completed a move from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported 70 million euros ($73 million) this week.
Also signed was 19-year-old Brazilian defender Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for 35 million euros ($36 million).
