Fort Riley reports $2 billion economic impact in past fiscal year
FORT RILEY (KSNT) - Military officials at Fort Riley are reporting the military post had a major impact on the local economy during the previous fiscal year.
Kirk Hutchinson with the Fort Riley Army installation shared a press release on Jan. 24 showing the post had a direct economic impact of more than $2 billion from October 2023 through to September 2024. Fort Riley's Garrison Commander, Colonel Jerry Nunziato, presented this report at the Flint Hills Regional Council Growth Summit.
“Fort Riley continues to have a positive impact on the economy of the Flint Hills region and is vitally important to the Kansas economy," Nunziato said. "At the same time, it’s important to note that the great support we get from the Flint Hills communities helps make Fort Riley the jewel that it is."
Fort Riley measured its economic impact through several different factors, coming to a total impact amount of more than $2,047,159,088. The factors cited in the report and their corresponding amounts for fiscal year 2024 are below:
- Payroll - $1,312,233,352.
- Contracts: supply and service - $209,853,157.
- Construction - $31,430,337.
- Intergovernmental Support Agreements (IGSAs) - $48,921,628.
- VA expenditures - $341,099,761.
- Education - $24,053,311.
- Health care - $79,567,542.
Fort Riley is home to more than 59,000 soldiers and their families, civilian employees, retirees and veterans living in the scenic Flint Hills of Kansas. You can read through the full economic impact report in the document below:
