Why Carrie Underwood & Mike Fisher Decided To Shift Their Marriage Out of the Spotlight
Carrie Underwood was front and center at Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday, Jan. 20, but she and her husband Mike Fisher are keeping their personal life off the radar. Even though her family was in Washington, D.C. to support her, she and the retired hockey player have shifted their marriage from public to private.
That wasn’t always the case in their 15-year marriage, Underwood and Fisher decided recently that their red carpet days together are over for their own peace of mind. “They used to share more but they’ve have had a lot of trolling so don’t want to put themselves through any unnecessary negativity,” an insider told the Daily Mail. “There are a lot of haters out there and both Carrie and Mike like to keep things positive.”
The internet wasn’t exactly happy when the 41-year-old country star accepted Donald Trump’s invite to perform at his inauguration. One look at her Jan. 18 Instagram post (she never posted about her time in Washington, D.C.), shows a slew of negative comments.
“Notice how she hasn’t posted about the inauguration… I mean I don’t see why not since you support him you might as well be open about it…. Guess you’re a little embarrassed?? Guilty?? Shameful??,” wrote one critic. Another added, “I’ve been a fan of yours since I was 9 years old… you have always been a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community but… damn… why him? You should’ve known better than to get involved. Regardless of why you chose to… /: unfollowed.”
Those comments are just a handful of what Underwood received under a post unrelated to politics. Still, the “Before He Cheats” singer probably doesn’t want that same scrutiny about her marriage or her kids, sons Isaiah, 9, and Jacob, 6. “They’re enjoying keeping their personal life private and their marriage off social media for the most part,” the Daily Mail source said.
The duo was set up in 2008 by Underwood’s bassist Mark Childers, who was a friend of Fisher. She was a little reluctant to meet the NHL star though. “I mean, can I make dating more difficult? Let’s get a hockey guy who lives in another country. Awesome,” she explained in MTV’s Behind the Music podcast. “We’re sticking him in a meet-and-greet because if he’s weird, I don’t want to deal with him.”
Of course, the fireworks flew, and by December 2009 they were engaged. The couple got married on July 10, 2010. It’s been a wedded bliss ever since, but that doesn’t mean they want to share every single moment with the world. Underwood and Fisher realized that the fans could have her public life while the rest of their family moments were for them only.
