When are taxes due in 2025?
According to the IRS, Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, will begin the nation's tax season. The deadline for filing this year will be Tuesday, April 15. An automatic six-month extension is available by filing Form 4868. However, taxpayers must request the extra time by the due date of their return and could owe interest on any tax that is not paid by the original deadline.
How to file taxes in 2025
If taxpayers choose to file electronically, they can expect their refund within three weeks of when the IRS receives their return. For those who decide to mail a paper return, it could take up to six weeks to process. Mailed paper returns also need copies of supporting tax forms attached.
People with an Adjusted Gross Income of $84,000 or less can use IRS Free File, online guided tax preparation software from companies that partner with the IRS. The agency notes that people who do not meet the requirements can still use Free File Fillable Forms, but will have to do the work themselves.
Can Ohioans file taxes directly with the IRS?
In a new release, the IRS revealed that it will offer Direct File, which allows eligible taxpayers to file their taxes directly with the IRS for free, in 25 states. However, Ohio was not among the states the IRS listed.
Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington State and Wyoming were the first states to use Direct File in a pilot program that began last year. For 2025, Alaska, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, have been added to the list.
