Bird flu detected in animals at Long Island farm: What to know
SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) – Bird flu has been detected in poultry at a Long Island farm, according to health officials.
The farm, located in Suffolk County, has not been identified. Officials from the county's Office of Emergency Management and the state Department of Health are interviewing potentially exposed workers.
They're also providing bird flu testing and preventative medications to those considered high-risk.
"The risk to public health is minimal as the virus at this point is not transmissible among humans," said Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott.
The farm, which houses more than 100,000 birds, is now under quarantine.
A massive bird flu outbreak happened in the U.S. in 2024. It has since spread beyond chickens, to cows, cats, pigs and even humans.
