South Carolina man sentenced for 2023 Cohoes shooting
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A South Carolina man has been sentenced for a shooting in Cohoes that killed Shieer Leggett in 2023. Nalik Sealy, 26, pleaded not guilty to murder and weapon charges in February 2024 before accepting a plea deal and pleading guilty to manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
Sealy was sentenced to five to 15 years in prison for the manslaughter charge and 12 years in prison for the weapons charge on Tuesday, per the Albany County District Attorney's Office. The defendant was involved in a confrontation with Dontie Mitchell outside of a convenience store on August 11, 2023, which sparked a gunfight that led to the death of Leggett, who was not involved in the fight, according to the DA's Office.
Mitchell was found not guilty of attempted murder but guilty of criminal possession of a weapon in a jury trial in December. He will be sentenced on February 13.
