TikTokers offered $5,000 to join Instagram but you’ll need to post 10 reels a month in surprise ‘bonus programme’
SOCIAL media giant Meta has offered to pay popular creators up to $5,000 (£4,000) to join its platforms Facebook and Instagram.
The tempting cash offer comes just days after rival platform TikTok was removed from US app stores, amid a tumultuous ban.
The catch is that users must post at least 20 Reels on Facebook and 10 Reels on Instagram each month[/caption]While President Donald Trump is set to row back on the ban, TikTok remains unavailable to download from app stores.
Meta, poised to net a significant number of eyeballs during TikTok’s turmoil, has said people joining from “third-party social apps” will get cash based on “an evaluation of your social presence”.
Though the company does not mention TikTok by name, the timing suggests Meta is attempting to capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding its rival, the BBC reported.
The so-called “Breakthrough bonus programme” offers creators money during their first 90 days on Facebook and Instagram.
The catch is that users must post at least 20 Reels on Facebook and 10 Reels on Instagram each month.
These must be original videos, according to Meta, and not clips previously shared on other platforms.
Not everyone will be eligible to join.
Meta’s bonus is only available to creators who are based in the US, are aged 18 or older, and are new to both Facebook and Instagram.
The tech giant will decide who gets onto the programme on a case-by-case basis, as people have to apply with their existing social media profiles.
It is also offering other perks, including a free subscription to its blue check verification.
Instagram has made a number of changes to its video offering in recent weeks, as it aims to keep ‘TikTok refugees’ even as US president Donald Trump attempts to revive the app following a short-lived ban.
The same day TikTok was banned, Instagram unveiled a new video editing app called Edits, which resembles TikTok’s editing app CapCuts.
The app has also increased the length of Reels – its short-video offering that directly rivalled TikTok – to three minutes.
